Do you know your Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure based on your weight and height.
🧮 BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
📌 A Worked example:
If you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 m tall:
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9
That falls within the 18.5 to 24.9 adult BMI range.
For adults, W.H.O. classifies:
⚖️ Below 18.5: Underweight
✅ 18.5–24.9: Normal weight
⚠️ 25.0–29.9: Overweight
🚨 30 or above: Obesity
W.H.O. states that higher BMI, overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Obesity is also associated with several types of cancer. W.H.O. notes that the risk of noncommunicable diseases increases as BMI rises.
But Remember: BMI is a screening tool, not a complete picture of your health. Other factors also matter.
